How to care for majlis carpets and seating between washes

Al Baraa Clean ·

A large majlis with tall arched windows, white sofas, an ornate rug and a glossy marble floor

The majlis is the room that receives the most guests, and its carpet and seating take the most dust and stains.

Regular care keeps it clean, reduces the need for heavy cleaning, and makes hosting easier.

Regular cleaning

  • Vacuum the carpet regularly, because dust that builds up between the fibres wears them down over time.
  • Pass the vacuum over the carpet in more than one direction, so the dust comes out from deep down.
  • Check the care instructions for your type of carpet before choosing the suction power.
  • Shake out the seat cushions and turn them from time to time, so the wear is spread evenly.

Dealing with stains

A fresh stain is easier to remove than an old one, so do not put it off.

  • Soak up the liquid with a clean tissue or a white cloth, pressing gently.
  • Do not rub the stain, because rubbing pushes it deeper into the fibres and spreads it wider.
  • Try any cleaner on a hidden corner first, to make sure it does not change the colour.
  • Use lukewarm water and a little gentle cleaner, then rinse with clean water.

Common mistakes

  • Using a large amount of water, so the moisture reaches the lower layers of the carpet.
  • Mixing more than one cleaner at the same time.
  • Using a rough brush that damages the fibres.
  • Leaving a stain for days before dealing with it.

After cleaning

  • Open the windows or turn on the ventilation until the carpet and the seating are completely dry.
  • Do not put heavy furniture back before the carpet is dry.
  • Trapped moisture can cause an unpleasant smell.

Before guests arrive

  • Arrange the cushions and shake them out well before the guests arrive.
  • Wipe the dust from the surfaces near the seating.
  • Make sure the floor around the carpet is clean and dry.
  • Open the windows to refresh the air in the majlis.

Choose the right time

  • Start in the morning, so the fabrics dry before the evening.
  • Get the room ready before the wash begins, and lift small items off the floor.
  • Keep children and pets away from the area until it is dry.
  • Pick a day when no guests are expected, so you can finish the job without rushing.

When to ask for a specialist wash

  • If the smell stays after you have cleaned.
  • If most of the carpet or seating is dirty.
  • If the stains are old or large.
  • Before a big occasion, or after hosting a large number of guests.

In these cases, washing with specialist equipment reaches what a household vacuum cannot.
