How to keep the water tank in your home clean

Al Baraa Clean ·

The water tank is an essential part of the home, yet many people only pay attention to it when a problem appears.

Regular checks help you notice early what needs cleaning.

Check the tank regularly

  • Make sure the lid closes tightly and that there are no openings where dust or insects can get in.
  • Look at the colour and clarity of the water when you open the tap.
  • Pay attention to any unusual smell or taste.
  • Inspect the tank from the outside for leaks, cracks or signs of damp.
  • Make sure the vent is in good condition and protected by a mesh.

Signs that it needs cleaning

  • Cloudiness or particles in the water.
  • Deposits or a layer on the walls of the tank when you inspect it.
  • An unpleasant smell.
  • A long time since the last cleaning.

What you can do yourself

  • Keep the area around the tank clean.
  • Make sure the float and the visible pipes are in good condition.
  • Write down the date of the last cleaning, so you remember when the next one is due.
  • Make sure everyone in the household knows where the tank is and where the shut-off valve is.
  • Check the tank before the periods when your home uses more water.

If your home has more than one tank

  • Many homes have an underground tank and a rooftop one, so check each of them.
  • Pay attention to the pipes that connect the two tanks.
  • Notice any difference in the colour or smell of the water between the two tanks.

Simple precautions

  • Keep cleaning products and chemicals away from the tank.
  • Do not put heavy objects on the lid of the tank.
  • Repair any small leak early, before it grows.
  • Keep access to the tank easy, for checking and cleaning.

When to call a specialist

Cleaning a tank from the inside takes equipment and knowledge of safety procedures, especially for underground and enclosed tanks.

  • Do not enter an enclosed tank yourself, because it may not be safe to do so.
  • Ask a specialist company to do the cleaning.
  • Ask them to inspect the tank and tell you its condition while they work.

After the tank is cleaned

  • Let the water run from the taps for a few minutes before you use it.
  • Notice the colour and smell of the water over the following days.
  • Write down the date of the cleaning, so you know when the next check is due.
