Blackout layers trap more than light
A blackout curtain is made of two or three layers: a dense outer fabric, an opaque lining behind it, and sometimes a middle insulating layer. That construction blocks the light, but it also blocks airflow, so fine dust and odours become trapped deep in the weave rather than showing on the surface.
We start by hearing what you notice about your curtains and which district you are in, then we agree a time. We take the curtains down, wash them in a way suited to blackout fabric, and pay attention to the lining, the hanging rings and the stitched edges. Call or message us on WhatsApp to begin.

What does blackout curtain washing cover?
These are the parts the work goes through in each blackout curtain, depending on its condition and what you notice about it.
- The dense outer fabric
The fabric is washed according to its composition, as blackout material is usually woven or coated polyester, both of which need the right water temperature to avoid any change in the panel's dimensions.
- The opaque lining
The lining is a layer stitched inside and gives the curtain its light-blocking quality, so it is treated carefully to prevent it from shrinking or pulling away from the outer fabric.
- Hanging rings and header
The rings and the header collect dust, and we check that both are clean and undamaged, since they are what the curtain hangs from when it goes back up.
- Edges and stitching
The edges and stitching along them are handled carefully, because excess pressure can distort the shape and open the seam, particularly on heavy bottom hems.
- Stains and yellowing
Stains on pale fabric and yellowing from sun exposure need to be assessed before the main wash, and we look for these when we take the curtain down.
- Trapped odours
Multiple layers trap odours from air conditioning, cooking or dust, and these leave with a full wash and proper drying of the curtain.
How do we start?
Three simple steps, and we take care of the rest.
Call or message us on WhatsApp
Tell us the service you need and your district.
Tell us what you notice
Tell us whether you notice stains, yellowing or an odour, how many curtains there are, which district you are in, and what fabric you think they are made from.
We agree a time
We settle on a time that suits you, and you prepare by removing any accessories from the rings and leaving clear access to the curtain rails.
We start the work
We take the curtains down, wash them and return them after drying. Check the fabric, the lining and the rings, and make sure the curtain draws and closes as it should.
A service that comes to your door
- We come to youOur team arrives at your home with its equipment.
- One callCall or message us on WhatsApp and we arrange the rest.
- The same team for your other textilesWe also clean roller blinds, chiffon curtains, sofas, carpets, wall-to-wall carpet, mattresses and more.
- Describe your curtains in your own wordsA call or a WhatsApp message is enough to tell us about your curtains and agree a time.
One worry is that the lining will shrink or separate from the outer fabric after washing. This usually happens when heat or pressure unsuited to the fabric is used. When you tell us about your curtains and their specifications we agree on the right approach, and you leave the rest to us.

Questions about Blackout curtain wash
How do I know my blackout curtains need washing?
Signs include a dusty smell when you draw the curtain, yellow or grey marks on pale fabric, and a noticeable heaviness in the panels. Because blackout layers hide dirt from the surface, the curtains often need washing before any obvious marks appear.
Do I need to take the curtains down before the team arrives?
No, we take them down at the appointment. Just make sure the rails are easy to reach and remove any accessories from the rings beforehand. If the rails are very high or in a tight space, let us know when you call so we can prepare.
Will yellowing on white blackout fabric come out with washing?
It depends on the cause. Yellowing from dust and moisture responds well to proper washing. Yellowing from direct sun on coated fabric may be partly permanent. We look at the fabric when we collect the curtain and tell you what we find.
What affects the cost of washing blackout curtains?
The cost depends on the number and size of the curtains, whether they have a separately stitched lining, and whether there are stains needing treatment. Tell us these details when you call and we agree a price together.
When the curtains come back, what should I check before hanging them?
Check that the lining still lines up with the outer fabric and has not shrunk, that the rings are undamaged and slide freely on the rail, and that the bottom hem is straight. Then draw the curtain closed to confirm it blocks light as before.
