Ground-tank cleaning

Water from your ground tank reaches the tap after passing over walls and a floor you cannot easily see. We clean them so the water is clean from the source.

About the service

The ground tank floor only visible when cleaned

A ground tank is buried underground or sits in a service room, which means lime deposits, silt and algae can build up on its walls and floor without anyone noticing. Soil contains salts and minerals that can find their way into older tanks or those with hairline cracks, changing the colour or smell of the water before it ever reaches your tap.

We start by hearing what you have noticed, then we drain the tank, inspect its walls, floor, inlet, outlet and access hatch, and clean the whole interior. Call or message us on WhatsApp, tell us your district and the tank size, and we agree a time.

What does ground-tank cleaning cover?

These are the parts the cleaning covers inside the ground tank, depending on its condition and what the inspection finds.

  • Interior walls

Lime scale and salt deposits cling to concrete or fibreglass walls over time, and removing them stops them breaking off and entering the water.

  • Tank floor

Silt and fine sand settle at the floor of the ground tank because it is the lowest point, and cleaning it removes the layer that clouds the water when it is disturbed.

  • Water inlet

The inlet opening and adjacent pipework collect deposits from the constant flow of water, and checking them reveals any partial blockage before it affects the pressure.

  • Water outlet

The outlet to the pump or the internal network needs checking to make sure it is free of deposits that could travel through to the taps.

  • Access hatch and cover

The ground tank cover is exposed to soil and dust from outside, and keeping it clean and well-seated matters to stop what is outside finding its way in.

  • Maintenance shaft walls

Where a cylindrical access shaft leads down to the tank, dirt gathers on its inner walls and is wiped as part of the job, since it is the path water has to pass near to reach the cover.

How do we start?

Three simple steps, and we take care of the rest.

  1. Call or message us on WhatsApp

Tell us the service you need and your district.

  2. Tell us about the tank

Tell us what you notice in the water, where the tank sits, roughly how large it is, and which district you are in, so we can prepare the work.

  3. Agree a time and prepare

We agree a time that suits you, and you make sure the water supply to the tank can be shut off before we arrive so the tank can be drained and the work started.

  4. We work, then you check

We drain the tank, inspect and clean the walls, floor, inlet, outlet and cover, then you run the water and check its colour and smell from the tap closest to the tank.

Questions about Ground-tank cleaning

How do I know my ground tank needs cleaning?

Clear signs include water with a slight yellowing or visible sediment when you open the tap, and an earthy or muddy smell in water that has been sitting. Concrete ground tanks can develop hairline cracks that let soil seep in over time, which makes regular inspection worthwhile even when no obvious signs appear.

How does cleaning a ground tank differ from a rooftop tank?

A ground tank is often larger and made from concrete in many homes, and it needs to be drained before someone enters through a narrow hatch. A rooftop tank is generally easier to access. Each one is discussed separately when you call.

Do I need to empty the tank fully before the cleaning appointment?

Draining the tank is part of the work itself, not something you need to do alone beforehand. What matters is that the water supply to the tank can be shut off before the appointment, and the details are agreed with you when you call.

Does the tank size change how the work is done?

Yes, larger tanks take longer to drain and have more wall and floor area to clean, and may need someone to enter rather than working only from the hatch. That is why we ask for an approximate size when you call, so we can prepare properly.

What should I check on my ground tank after cleaning?

Run the tap closest to the tank and watch the water until it runs completely clear, then smell it to confirm there is no earthy odour. Also check the access hatch cover outside to make sure it is firmly closed after the work, as that cover is the first line of defence against contamination from outside.
