A quick wipe does not clear the smell from a microwave
The fat that sprays out during heating sticks to the ceiling and side walls of the microwave, and builds up layer by layer until it becomes hard and difficult to shift. The smell that comes back after every use comes from those burnt deposits, not from whatever food is on the turntable in front of you.
Tell us your district and describe how the microwave looks, and we agree a time with you. We clean the interior walls and ceiling, the glass turntable and its ring, the door seal, the control panel and the exterior surfaces, then we run the microwave with you to check the smell is gone.

- Door and seal
What does microwave cleaning cover?
These are the parts the cleaning goes through, depending on the condition of the microwave and the level of grease, baked-on stains or smell.
- Ceiling and interior walls
Airborne grease settles first on the interior ceiling and runs down the sides. Removing it means softening the hardened layer before wiping, to avoid scratching the surface.
- The glass turntable
The turntable catches drips directly. It comes out of the unit and is washed separately, because grime builds up under its rim and causes a smell when the microwave heats.
- The turntable ring and support
The ring and roller support that the turntable sits on collect food residue in their tracks, and that is often the source of an unusual scraping sound while the plate turns.
- Door interior and seal
The inner glass panel of the door picks up splatter that is hard to see from outside, and the rubber seal traps grease in its folds, which can affect how well the door closes over time.
- Control panel and handle
The button panel takes daily hand contact and grease smears. We wipe it carefully to avoid letting moisture get behind the buttons.
- The exterior body
The outer face and sides collect kitchen dust and grease over time. Wiping them finishes the clean, inside and out.

One worry is that the interior coating of the microwave will get scratched or damaged when removing hard baked-on stains. Hardened deposits need to be softened before wiping, not scrubbed forcefully, and that principle governs how the interior surface is handled throughout the job. Tell us what you see and leave the rest to us.

Questions about Microwave cleaning
Where does the microwave smell come from and how do I know it needs cleaning?
The smell comes from burnt grease and food residue on the interior walls and ceiling, and it gets stronger with each new heating cycle. If you notice a smell when it runs, see yellow or brown stains on the ceiling or walls, or hear an unusual sound from the turntable, the microwave needs cleaning.
Should I empty the microwave and remove the turntable before you arrive?
Just remove any food or containers from the microwave and leave it empty. The glass turntable and its ring are taken out during the work because they are washed separately, so there is no need to remove them beforehand.
There are black marks on the inside ceiling of my microwave, can they be removed?
Black marks on the interior ceiling are burnt grease that has built up from food splatter over a long time. They can usually be removed by softening them first and then wiping carefully, but if the interior surface was already damaged beforehand some marks may remain. We assess the situation when you call so we can tell you what to expect.
Does cleaning a countertop microwave differ from a built-in microwave?
The interior parts cleaned are similar in both cases, but a built-in microwave fitted inside kitchen cabinets means a tighter working space and the unit may be harder to access. When you call, tell us the type and where it sits so we can prepare, and the details of the job are agreed from there.
What should I check after the microwave is cleaned?
Run the microwave for a minute with a cup of water and check there is no smell. Make sure the glass turntable turns smoothly without noise, and check the door closes without needing extra pressure. We carry out this check with you before we finish.
