Fibreglass tank insulation

Have you noticed a soft patch on your fibreglass tank wall or a damp mark below it? The protective layer has worn through, and we take care of it for you.

About the service

Fibreglass wears down insulation protects it

A fibreglass tank is made from compressed glass fibres bound with a resin matrix. It is light and rust-free, but the inner resin layer degrades over time under the intense heat and the temperature swings between day and night. Once that layer breaks down, the walls become effectively porous: water seeps through, or its taste changes.

Tell us what you notice in your tank, whether it is damp on the outside, a change in the water, or fine cracks on the surface. Tell us your district and the tank size, and we agree a time. Work starts after the tank is emptied and cleaned.

  • Inner wall
  • Lid and openings
  • Base and pipe fittings

What does fibreglass tank insulation cover?

These are the parts the work goes through on a fibreglass tank, depending on its condition and what you have noticed.

  • The inner wall

We inspect the inner surface for areas where the resin layer has eroded or crumbled, then treat those areas before applying the insulating coat so it bonds properly.

  • The lid and openings

The lid and the edges of vent and inspection openings are common weak points in fibreglass tanks, and we include them in the work because any gap there breaks the insulating layer.

  • Base and pipe fittings

We treat the base area and the points where fill and drain pipes connect, as these face the most moisture build-up and the most continuous mechanical stress.

  • Hairline cracks

Hairline cracks in a fibreglass wall are not always visible to the eye, but they show up when the surface is cleaned and dried, and we treat them before insulation so they do not widen.

  • Upper outer surface

The upper part of the outer wall gets direct sun, and we treat it when needed to slow the breakdown of the fibres from the outside.

  • Final check

After the work is done we check the full surface coverage and confirm there are no untreated areas before you refill the tank.

How do we start?

Three simple steps, and we take care of the rest.

  1. Call or message us on WhatsApp

Tell us the service you need and your district.

  2. Tell us about the tank's condition

Tell us what you have noticed, the tank type and material if you know it, which district it is in, and whether it is rooftop or ground level.

  3. We agree a time and you prepare

We settle on a time that suits you, and you make sure the tank is completely emptied of water before the appointment, with clear access to it.

  4. We work and you check

We clean the surface, treat the cracks, and cover the lid, openings and base, then after you refill you check that the damp patches are gone.

Questions about Fibreglass tank insulation

My tank is fibreglass, how do I tell the insulation has worn out?

Common signs are damp appearing on the outer wall or below the tank, a change in the taste or colour of the water, or a soft feel when you press on certain parts of the tank wall. Some hairline cracks only show up when the inner surface is cleaned and fully dried.

Does a fibreglass tank need to be fully emptied before insulation?

Yes, emptying the tank completely is an essential first condition before any work on the inner walls. Leaving water at the bottom prevents the protective layer from bonding properly and affects the result. We remind you of this when you call and agree a time after the tank is empty.

What affects the cost of fibreglass tank insulation?

It depends on the tank size and how many units there are, the condition of the inner surface and how far it has degraded, and how easy it is to reach, whether it is rooftop or below ground. We agree the price after you describe the tank's condition when you call.

What is different about insulating a fibreglass tank compared with a concrete one?

A concrete tank is naturally porous and needs seepage treatment from outside and insulation from inside. A fibreglass tank is not porous by nature, but its resin layer breaks down with time. The diagnosis and the method differ between the two because the material and the approach required are different.

Do I need to clean and disinfect the tank after fibreglass insulation?

Cleaning the tank before insulation is part of the job because the coat will not bond to a dirty surface. Disinfection is advisable after any work inside the tank before the water is used for drinking or cooking again, and that is a separate service we can agree on when you call.
